Most often, the letters i and y give one of these vowel sounds: / ɪ /, / aɪ /, / ɜː /, / ɪː /. And although the same pattern can be read in different ways (compare -ine in shine and machine), the knowledge of patterns still makes it easier to read English words. The exercises on this page will allow you to practice the pronunciation of the vowels i and y, to remember the characteristic combinations and the corresponding sounds.
