Past Perfect Continuous является эквивалентом Present Perfect Continuous для прошлого.
Мы употребляем Past Perfect Continuous, когда хотим показать, что процесс начался в прошлом и уже длился сколько-то времени на тот момент в прошлом, о котором идёт речь. Не важно, был ли процесс на тот момент завершён или он всё ещё продолжался потом.
