Past continuous form exercises

Practise how to make positive, negative and question sentences in the past continuous (past progressive) tense.

Read explanation

We form the past continuous using the auxiliary verb "be" in the past form (was/were) and the main verb plus -ing ending: was/were + doing / reading / looking / standing etc. When writing, you should mind the correct spelling of a gerund. In negations, we add “not” after the auxiliary verb. In questions, was/were goes before the subject. The exercises on this page will enable you to practise the formation of affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences in the past continuous tense. They are composed for beginners and essential for the further study of this verb tense.
